ChilestuffGreetings denizens00:09
ChilestuffIs anyone alive for advice?00:10
ChilestuffAwake?00:10
ChilestuffAware?00:10
ChilestuffSentient?00:10
ChilestuffOf course not ... everyone who would play this game would all be out with supermodels on a saturday night ...00:12
ChilestuffSilly me00:12
Chilestuff;p00:12
SectorAh, who needs a supermodel?00:12
Chilestufflol00:12
ChilestuffHowdy Sector00:13
SectorHello00:13
ChilestuffCan you help a total newb?00:13
SectorI dunno, what did you need help with?00:13
ChilestuffMeaning I just Dld the game and have never played even the old game00:13
ChilestuffWell asteroids for one ... of what use are they?00:14
ChilestuffAnd tech research advice would be helpful00:14
ChilestuffAnd ship design ...00:14
ChilestuffI have a list  :)00:14
SectorThis could be a good starting point:  http://www.freeorion.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=9954&sid=ac3167b6a0f968ff4ac5c9fe39431e8600:14
tpbTitle: FreeOrion View topic - My personal strategy guide (at www.freeorion.org)00:14
ChilestuffYeah I saw the wiki, but it is less than specific00:15
ChilestuffOh thanks00:15
SectorAs for research, depends on what route you want to take.  Subterranean Habitation can help at the start as it will allow you to colonize more types of planets.00:16
Chilestuffeah I kinda stumbled into that one  :)00:16
ChilestuffWhat about weapons and such00:17
ChilestuffMonsters SUK00:17
SectorDomesticated Mega-Fauna is only useful if you have some monster nests around you, but doesn't take a lot to research.  Just have to put an outpost where the nest is and have that technology to start gaining some monsters that eventually grow into more powerful ones if left where they like (such as Krakens around a gas giant).00:17
ChilestuffOnly monters I find seem to belong to other races00:18
SectorWeapons are of course useful.  But needs will vary, may not need any right away if you don't have any AI's nearby, but could be useful in dealing with some monsters as well.00:18
ChilestuffMaybe I need to find the right seed ... I ALWAYS have AIs nearby00:18
SectorDepending on galaxy setup, may be up to three types of monster nests (Kraken (gas giant), Juggernaught (asteroid field) or Snowflake (small planets).00:19
ChilestuffCan I "mine" or otherwise exploit the asteroids, and if so how?00:19
SectorUsually don't find all three present in one game.  But if the AI's have some monsters there are some nests somewhere.00:19
ChilestuffSo I have to outpost those locations and tech mega fauna to get them?00:20
SectorExobots can colonize asteroid fields, there's also Artificial Planet which can turn asteroid fields into a tiny planet.00:20
SectorYup.00:20
ChilestuffAhj00:20
Chilestuff%$%$00:20
ChilestuffSorry, I suffer from terminal FFS00:20
SectorWhere there is a nest, most wont have a nest, though sometimes you can even find two nests in the same system.00:21
ChilestuffI haven't seen any nests, but you say they don't need to be there to capture monsters?00:22
SectorYou need to have an outpost or a colony at a system with a nest.00:23
ChilestuffSo asteroids are only good for exobots and catching monsters?00:23
ChilestuffHow can I spot a nest? Haven't seen one yet00:23
SectorAlso needed for some types of armor or ship hulls.00:23
ChilestuffYeah seen the asteroid hull00:24
* Chilestuff woulda thought there'd be a way to exploit resources at belts00:24
SectorWill show up as an icon above the planet type (small tundra or whatever).00:24
Chilestuffhmm00:25
ChilestuffDo all the icons mean nests?00:25
ChilestuffI see the "bonus" icons00:25
SectorHover the mouse over the icon to see what it is.00:26
ChilestuffDoes it specifically say "nest"?00:26
SectorThere's one that's not really a nest "Kraken in the ice, but with the right technology (Xenoarcheology) you can get a monster out of it, but doesn't keep producing monsters.00:27
ChilestuffI've seen a lot of icons, but no "nests"00:27
SectorYup00:27
Chilestuffok00:27
SectorIf you click on Pedia (the question mark upper right corner) then go to Special it'll show you all the types, including the nests.00:28
SectorThat will also show you what they look like.00:29
ChilestuffThanls for the advice ... I will ask for more  :P00:29
ChilestuffKewl00:29
SectorFeel free to ask.00:29
ChilestuffAFK to play00:29
SectorEnjoy00:29
SectorHmmm, hard to play if one be away from the keyboard...00:30
ChilestuffGood point00:30
ChilestuffAFW then  (window)00:30
Chilestuff;p00:30
Chilestuffhmm04:21
ChilestuffIs there a tech tree other than ingame? As in hulls and weapons and what's needed to get them?04:24

ChilestuffGreetings denizens13:54
ChilestuffProlly too early for anyone to be alive, but questions abound from a newb13:55
Chilestuff(Like that'll make someone wake up and say "Just what I wanted to deal with on a Sunday morning!")13:56
ChilestuffAaaaanyway .. from the description it appears that robotic interface: shields "only applies to ships crewed by Robotic Metabolism species"13:58
ChilestuffDoes that mean humans cant use them? And if so, why does the game let humans place em in ships?13:59
ChilestuffOf course the possibility, (probability) exists that I am mistaken14:00
SectorYou can create ship designs for whatever species then if you build them with a robotic one they can be used.  Ships are crewed by whatever species occupies the planet you build them on.14:08
SectorThere actually used to be a tech tree at one point in time, but it changed enough it was quickly out of date.14:09
ChilestuffYeah, but can humans use robotic shields?14:38
SectorNope.14:38
ChilestuffA bit misleading to let them be placed on human built ships  :/14:38
ChilestuffBTW, your guide was just what I was looking for14:39
ChilestuffThanks14:39
SectorWhen you design a ship there is no telling what race is going to build it.14:39
SectorWell, wasn't mine but glad it helped.14:39
ChilestuffAhh14:40
ChilestuffNext Q .. is there any way to show all visible lanes at once?14:41
ChilestuffOther than pointing a ship at a waypoint one at a time?14:41
SectorLinks between the circles are normally visible as far as you have explored, or can see within your sensor limit.  If they are hard to see you can adjust in Options - Galaxy Map.14:43
ChilestuffJust what option do I adjust? Nothing seems to work14:46
ChilestuffAll I've managed to do is change the color of the circles14:47
SectorDefault starlane color.14:48
ChilestuffYeah all that does is change circle color14:49
SectorHmmm, just tried it changes it here.14:54
ChilestuffAre you familiar with Murphy's Law?14:54
ChilestuffChile's Law has it beat14:55
SectorYou do need to exit and go back in for it to take effect.14:55
ChilestuffAhh14:55
SectorCan just do a resign then continue.14:56
Chilestuff*sigh*14:56
Chilestuffnada14:57
SectorMurphy at work?14:58
ChilestuffNope, Murphy has nothing on Chile's Law14:58
Chilestuff"Even if it defies the laws of physics, where I'm involved, it's STILL gonna find a way to go wrong"14:59
SectorMight be Finagle's law.14:59
Chilestuff?14:59
Sectorhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finagle's_law15:00
tpbTitle: Finagle's law - Wikipedia (at en.wikipedia.org)15:00
Chilestuffheh15:00
ChilestuffAnd it ain't gonna happen just once, but repeatedly15:01
ChilestuffLike an iron ball dropping on yer foot and bouncing  :)15:01
SectorTwice the fun.15:02
Chilestufftwice hell .. like a superball15:02
SectorCould also try (if possible) adjusting the contrast and/or brightness on your monitor.15:02
ChilestuffOh I really wish I could ... just installed Ubuntu last week and still figuring it out15:03
Chilestuff"We ain't in Windows any more Toto"15:06
SectorLaptop or something then?15:06
Sectorhttps://askubuntu.com/questions/91195/how-do-i-adjust-the-screen-contrast15:06
tpbTitle: graphics - How do I adjust the screen contrast? - Ask Ubuntu (at askubuntu.com)15:06
Sectorhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8_aF8OZBd015:06
ChilestuffYeah old Toshiba laptop15:11
SectorEasier to do with desktop monitors.15:11
ChilestuffOh they really need a &$&%$$ search bar in the software center15:18
SectorCan just apt-get from the command line to install stuff (sudo apt-get install whatever).15:19
ChilestuffOr at least list it alphabetically15:21
ChilestuffNot here15:21
Chilestuffbrb ... gotta reboot15:24

SectorLong reboot.17:38
ChilestuffHad to go get grocerie  :/17:43
Chilestuffs17:43
SectorHelp any?17:44
ChilestuffBeing a very talented cook has it's drawbacks ..17:44
ChilestuffNone17:44
ChilestuffCouldn't find the app, but did find out how to adjust via function keys17:44
Chilestuffno help17:44
ChilestuffStarlanes just won't show17:45
ChilestuffWhich sux cuz this game has very winding paths17:46
ChilestuffOnly way I see lanes is to point a ship, but that won't show supply or crossing lanes17:47
ChilestuffOnly dotted line for single path17:47
ChilestuffHell I didn't even know it was supposed to show lanes until I say a how to vid17:49
Chilestuffsaw17:49
ChilestuffWell fine, next question17:56
ChilestuffIs there any benifit to outposting asteroids in a system you already have a colony? Other than hulls and armor17:57
ChilestuffAnd how do I know what supply range is without lanes showing?18:00
SectorCan help contribute to defense.  Could build an Exobot colony there or use artificial planet on it.18:00
SectorShould show a line in your empire color connecting your systems that are in supply.18:01
Chilestuffshould18:04
ChilestuffHasn't yet18:05
Chilestuff*sigh* life calls18:05
