Freeorion11Is it normal that freeorion runs slowly on a new laptop  Linux with Intel HD graphics? I checked and it's loa07:19
Freeorion11OpenGL, but there is a lag when moving the mouse07:20

freeorion11I'm trying freeorion on a recent laptop under Linux with an Intel HD4400 card. I have OpenGL running (glxinfo) and freeorion is using it (LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose shows that it's loading the DRI driver). Still, the game is awfully slow. The mouse cursor is lagging even after starting a game and right from the start. When I start it with 'freeorion -r',21:34
freeorion11then the mouse is still lagging on the galaxy chart. Any ideas?21:34
SectorTried Options - Video Limit FPS?  Can also try Galaxy Map and turn some stuff off under General.  Can also try posting on the forum, might have better luck with asking there.21:38
freeorion11I limited the FPS to 4021:39
freeorion11still, I'm surprised for a game that seems to be around for a while already and that has native support in Linux, it shouldn't have problems to be rendered on a recent laptop, should it?21:39
freeorion11I must be doing something wrong21:39
freeorion11people were playing this game already 5 ago on recent hardware21:40
SectorWouldn't think so, usually runs pretty well these days.21:40
freeorion11(I mean 5 years ago on recent hardware)21:41
freeorion11I compiled it from the git repository on arch, so maybe that's a problem21:41

freeorion11glxinfo tells me that I have GLX version 1.4. so that might be a problem21:43
tomreynwhy? GLX != OpenGL21:44
tomreyni got a Radeon HD 4670 (dedicated) graphics card here and it lags, too. http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2643&cmp[]=1221:44

SectorUpdating video drivers can sometimes help.21:45
freeorion11how could people play this game 5 years ago, if it's lagging on modern hardware?21:45
tomreynwell you have an intel gpu from 2.5 years ago, i have a dedicated but lower spec graphics card from 3.5 years ago. so that's not exactly the latest top notch hardware.21:47
SectorDoesn't usually have any issues.  Though sometimes late game can have some.21:48
tomreyni assume freeorion was developed for an earlier opengl version, just like megaglest, and the engines weren't rewritten since, and thus don't perform too well on more current hardware.21:49

freeorion11glxinfo tells me "OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 11.0.7", so it cannot be a problem with that21:53
freeorion11it's a pity, I really wanted to try it.21:54
SectorYou should be able to on that hardware...21:55
freeorion11it's simply unplayable. After increasing the video ram in xorg (VideoRam) to 2GB, the title screen now has no more lag. but after starting the game, it is unplayable21:56
SectorMust be something going on.  But you'll probably have better luck posting on the forum (http://www.freeorion.org/forum/index.php) as more will see it there.21:58
tpbTitle: FreeOrion Index page (at www.freeorion.org)21:58
freeorion11I'll post it there some time. I'm now playing around with DRI and see whether it's a problem with my driver22:00
SectorHopefully you can get it working as it should.22:00
freeorion11(need to reboot; will play around; thanks for the help)22:01
SectorGood luck with it.22:01

tomreynoh i didnt know freeorion moved to github. good move.22:07
tomreynthe sf.net page doesn't seem to point it out22:07
tomreynit's not super visible either but you can add this blue bar on top: http://sourceforge.net/projects/megaglest/22:08

tomreynso i just built head of master, it is playable for me. the science screen is laggy as it has been, and so is  round advancement23:26
tomreynswitching between mneus also takes up to 3 seconds23:28
tomreynbut it works in general (until round 100, i guess)23:28
