WoodenBeastI'm having a bit of trouble getting FreeOrion to run. I'm running Windows Vista, I have all the necessary system requirements and the necessary framework, yet it crashes as soon as I run it. The black box opens up, and the game window, but the game window stops responding.01:33
WoodenBeastI cannot seem to find any logs.01:33
WoodenBeastI know it is not the vistas firewall or antivirus, I've disabled both of them temporarily as I was attempting to run the game.01:34
WoodenBeastI'm using v. 0.3.13, the latest one01:36
WoodenBeastMy graphics card is ATI Radeon Xpres 115001:39
GeofftheMediodo you know what version of opengl your card supports?01:43
GeofftheMediologs should be in C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\FreeOrion01:43
WoodenBeast^^ I'm not sure01:44
STalKer-Xlooks like a laptop graphics card01:44
WoodenBeastIt is01:45
WoodenBeastI found the Ogre log01:45
WoodenBeastI don't suppose though that you'd appreciate it if I were to post the whole thing.01:47
GeofftheMediosearch for the part about opengl version01:47
GeofftheMedioGL_VERSION =01:48
WoodenBeast01:27:13: GL_VERSION = 1.1.001:49
GeofftheMediothat's waaay to low, unfortunately...01:50
GeofftheMedioyou might not even be able to run the versions prior to v0.3.11 which had significantly lower gl requirements than we do now01:50
GeofftheMedioalthough you can try01:50
GeofftheMediomight want to make sure your drivers are fully up to date, though01:50
GeofftheMedioin case the gl version increased01:50
WoodenBeastWhat is OpenGL?01:50
WoodenBeastGraphics Level?01:51
GeofftheMedioit's a 3D graphics rendering library or interface01:51
GeofftheMediohttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenGL01:51
tpbTitle: OpenGL - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (at en.wikipedia.org)01:51
WoodenBeastMy drivers are updated though01:51
WoodenBeastI'm completely unable to play FreeOrion with this computer then?01:52
GeofftheMedioyou might try getting radeon omega drivers, which might be more up to date than whatever your laptop manufacturer provides01:53
GeofftheMediohttp://www.omegadrivers.net/ati.php01:53
tpbTitle: OmegaDrivers.net - Home of the ATI & NVIDIA Omega Drivers. ATI (at www.omegadrivers.net)01:53
GeofftheMediobut even if you do get updated drivers, it's unlikely you'll be able to get the latest version of FreeOrion running on that graphics card01:53
STalKer-Xi doubt though that this graphics card only supports ogl 1.101:55
GeofftheMediowikipedia seems to think it should be capable of gl 2.001:57
GeofftheMediocheck out those omega drivers.  find the newest that support your card.01:57
WoodenBeasthttp://www.omegadrivers.net/ati_vista.php "Coming Soon" -______-01:58
tpbTitle: OmegaDrivers.net - Home of the ATI & NVIDIA Omega Drivers. ATI Windows Vista (at www.omegadrivers.net)01:58
STalKer-Xhehe01:58
STalKer-Xmaybe you have to activate ogl 2.0 in the options01:59
GeofftheMediook, try googling.  after 10 seconds: http://driverscollection.com/?H=Radeon%20Xpress%201150&By=ATI02:00
tpb<http://ln-s.net/3J8n> (at driverscollection.com)02:00
GeofftheMedioand you said your drivers are updated, but how do you know that?  did you get drivers from ATI, or just windows update or your laptop manufacturer?  if the latter, try from ATI directly.02:03
WoodenBeastI'm not completely IT literate, so I wouldn't know how to get the most out of my graphics card. I always updated through Windows Update.02:04
WoodenBeastDamn Microsoft. I trusted them. I figured that if I clicked the update button, and it told me that it was fully updated, then it was indeed fully updated @_@02:09
GeofftheMedioit's probably a bit more complicated than that...02:11
GeofftheMediothe manufacturer probably specifies what driver versions they've approved, and MS won't give you anything that's not approved02:11
GeofftheMedioand the manufacturer probably doesn't bother updating their approved drivers02:11
WoodenBeastHahaha02:13
WoodenBeastI'm installing it now02:14
WoodenBeastwill I have to restart the computer?02:16
WoodenBeastwait02:17
WoodenBeastobviously not02:17
WoodenBeastI got it to run02:17
WoodenBeastThanks a lot! I believe this actually solves a number of problems of mine.02:17
GeofftheMedioyou probably want to turn off a few options on the galaxy map options tab02:19
GeofftheMediobefore trying to start a game02:19
GeofftheMediogas rendering, background starfields, optimized system rendering02:20
GeofftheMediofog of war scanlines02:20
WoodenBeastYes, with the default options, the game is almost unbearably low FPS02:25
STalKer-Xheh02:28
STalKer-Xi remember trying to play it on my old 350mhz computer, 5 years ago :x02:28
STalKer-Xhm, maybe even longer :p02:29
WoodenBeastthanks for all the help, I'm going to get some rest03:28
